Leaders Are Made, Not Born

Leadership is a relationship between the leader and the led.  Like all relationships, the quality of the relationship can be improved with a bit of intelligent effort.

We do not subscribe to the notion that some people are born gifted and charismatic and will therefore be good leaders, while others are born without that charisma and will therefore never be good leaders.  We believe that everyone is a leader in some sense, that everyone can improve their leadership practices, and that charisma has less to do with it than character does.

Recent studies like Kouzes and Posner's The Leadership Challenge and Collin's Good to Great, clearly show that good leadership is more a matter of good relationships than anything else.  What Jim Collins calls "level-five leadership" looks a whole lot like what Jesus called "servanthood".  That's why we say that good leaders lead by serving and serve by leading.
